Peshawar: To prevent floods and wastage of rainwater, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has constructed 37 small and medium dams, with 24 under construction in various rivers and water channels, while designs for seven dams have been completed in the province.
A spokesperson of the Directorate of Small Dams of the Irrigation Department told on Tuesday that 37 small and medium dams have been constructed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including 15 operated by the provincial government and 11 under the supervision of WAPDA.
Similarly, 19 dams have been constructed in the merged districts which have 0.1377 million cultivated acre feet (CCA) and 0.3414 acre feet (AF) of water storage capacity. He said that 24 small dams with a storage capacity of 75,008 AF having 49,523 acres of CCA have been constructed in various districts of KP under the PSDP program of the federal government.
Apart from the completion of Pezu Dam in Lakki Marwat, Khattak Bandhan Dam in Kohat and Makh Banda Dam in Karak by the federal government, he said that Ichar and Manchura Dams in Mansehra, Chashma Akora Khel Dam in Karak, Sarozai Dam in Hang, Sanam Dam in Lower Dir, Dam Bada and the Ulta Dam in Swabia were also built jointly by the federal and provincial governments.
Similarly, seven medium dams including Bara Dam in Khyber, Tank Zam in Tank, Shiekh Haider Zam, Chaudwan Zam, Daraban and Kora Nullah in DIKhan and small Larzan Dam in Tank with a water storage capacity of 520,884 AF covering 171,748 CCA 5 megawatts besides 31 watts. the electricity generation capacity was in the design phase.
The designs of seven medium dams including Barwasa and Sher Dara Swabi, Sumri Payan Kohat, Surkhaway Mardan, Naki Nowshera, Shaheed Banda Charssadda and Tora Warae Hangu with a total storage capacity of 13,014 AF with 14,935 acres CCA have been completed.
