RAWALPINDI: An accountability court in Rawalpindi on Tuesday indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in a £190 million case.
Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana today conducted the hearing at Adiala Jail, where the PTI founder is currently lodged in Toshakhana, cipher and illegal marriages.
The accountability court judge read the charge sheet in the presence of Khan and Bushra in the courtroom.
Deputy public prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also appeared in court with his team.
NAB has launched an investigation against Imran Khan, his wife and others for allegedly acquiring hundreds of kanals of land in the name of Al Qadir University Trust, resulting in a loss of £190 million to the exchequer.
During the hearing today, the court said that the statements of 58 witnesses will be recorded in the case.
The judge asked the PTI founder whether he was guilty or not when he framed the charges against him.
To this Khan said, “Why should I read the charge sheet when I know what is written in it?”
Both Khan and his wife then denied the allegations against them.
At this point, Khan came to the stand and said that they don’t want any delay in this case. “NAB rushed before February 8, now we want speedy conviction.
The judge then asked if he had his teeth checked, to which the PTI founder replied in the negative saying that he was told that a doctor would visit the jail on Sunday.
“Now the prison authorities are saying that the doctor will come next week,” he added.
The court then granted Khan’s motion to find a general practitioner and dentist for his medical examination and dental examination.
Later, PTI’s counsel said that copies of the references must be provided seven days before the indictment, adding that these documents are relevant in relation to this case.
“We have submitted a request to share a copy of the documents,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NAB spokesperson said that all the records of witness statements will be provided to the lawyers of Khan and Bushra Bibi.
The hearing was then adjourned to March 6 and the court also directed that five NAB witnesses attend the hearing.
