LAHORE: World Tuberculosis (TB) Day was celebrated here and across the country as in many other countries around the world on Sunday with a renewed pledge to raise awareness about the disease to make Pakistan a healthy society.
Tuberculosis (TB) also claims thousands of lives every year in Pakistan. TB is considered to be the second deadliest infectious disease in the world after corona, however TB is treatable.
Various seminars, walks, awareness camps and other activities were organized by various governmental and non-governmental organizations on the occasion of the day.
According to data from the National TB Programme, about 6 thousand cases are reported in Pakistan every year, of which at least 27,000 are reported as multidrug-resistant types, while about 40,000 patients die from the infection.
The data further reveals that about 400,000 TB patients in Pakistan benefit from free diagnostic and treatment facilities every year and there are more than 1603 modern laboratories equipped with medical facilities in all provinces to deal with the menace of TB.
To raise awareness about this disease among the masses, World Tuberculosis Day is celebrated every year on March 24, which kills seven million people every year.
