WIMBLEDON: World number one Novak Djokovic has parted ways with his Croatian coach Goran Ivanisevic shortly before the start of the clay court season, the Serb announced on Wednesday.
Ivanisevic, who won the Wimbledon singles title in 2001 after finishing as runner-up in 1992, 1994 and 1998, became part of Djokovic’s 2019 squad and helped the 36-year-old win nine majors.
“Goran and I decided a few days ago to stop working together,” 24-time major champion Djokovic said in an Instagram post with a photo of himself and Ivanisevic playing a board game.
“Our chemistry on the court has had its ups and downs, but our friendship has always been rock solid. In fact, I’m proud to say (I’m not sure it’s him) that in addition to winning tournaments together, we’ve had the Battle of Parchis… for many years.
“And the tournament never ends for us. Sefinjo, thanks for everything, my friend. I love you.”
Djokovic was looking to win his 25th Grand Slam singles title but his bid was ended after a 6-1 6-2 6-7(6) 6-3 loss to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open last four in January.
Djokovic pulled out of the ongoing Miami Open to limit the number of events he plays this year after an unlucky third-round defeat to Luca Nardi in Indian Wells.
Djokovic will prepare for the clay court season before the French Open, which is scheduled from May 26 to June 9.
