Easter heist: Burglars take away $30m in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles authorities said Wednesday that robbers made off with nearly $30 million in the San Fernando Valley on Easter Sunday, the largest in the city’s history.
Officials said the largest robbery occurred at a facility in Sylmar that stores and manages cash collected from various commercial businesses.
Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr Elaine Morales said the Easter burglars broke into the building and the money depository.
The Los Angeles Times quoted a source as saying, “This is one of the biggest heists in the history of the city in terms of cash and more than the total of armored cars in the city.”
The report also stated that the robbers went through the roof of the Gardaworld building in Roxford Street and entered through a vault door.
Authorities are baffled as to how the criminals did not trigger the security alarm during the Easter holiday.
The theft was discovered when the vault was opened on Monday.
Aerial footage from ABC Los Angeles in Slymar shows a large portion of the building covered in plywood.
According to The Times, very few people know about the amount of money kept in the safe.
The robbery was reportedly committed by an experienced robber.
After receiving information, officials reached the spot and started an investigation.
The last major event was in 1997 when burglaries in the former Dunbar armory on Mateo Street netted more than $18 million.
In this case, the thief was arrested.
