RAWALPINDI: Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has been warned by the Pakistan Cricket Board for promoting fake betting companies.
The development came after Amir, who recently retired, was spotted on a betting company’s social media post recently.
PCB Amire said that there are restrictions on entering into contracts with competing companies, so accelerators should not be part of such promotions.
Following PCB’s directive, Amir announced that a contract with the controversial company has been signed before his retirement, but he will not use the pacer’s image for promotions.
It may be noted that Aamir faced criticism on social media after promoting his betting company.
According to sources, Amir’s one-year deal, which includes 60 social media posts, is worth $12.5 million with the betting company.
Amir was banned from international cricket for five years in 2010 along with Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Amir also served half of a six-month prison sentence at a young offender institution in Feltham and Dorset.
After marking his comeback in 2016, the 31-year-old helped Pakistan win the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, where the Men in Green beat arch rivals India by 180 runs in the final.
Amir is remembered for his breath-taking spell in the final where he obliterated India’s top order, dismissing Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and chasing master Virat Kohli.
However, the left-back announced his international retirement in December 2020 at the age of 28, saying he could no longer play under management and was “mentally suffering”.
But Amir retired before the series against New Zealand and joined the national team.
Pakistan and New Zealand will play three T20Is on April 18, 20 and 21 at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. Both sides will then move to Lahore where they will play the remaining two T20Is of the series on April 25 and 27 respectively.
Amir played 36 Tests, 61 One Day Internationals and 50 T20Is for Pakistan.
