Beijing: The Ministry of Water Resources said on Sunday it has made efforts to ensure water supply in about 500 large and medium irrigation areas in drought-prone areas in southwest China.
According to Zhang Xian, a researcher at the ministry, there has been a drought in Nannan and Sichuan provinces since this spring, and wheat and corn fields are being produced.
Since spring, Nanunna’s rainfall has been 42.3 percent below normal, Zhang said, predicting that the drought will continue.
To date, a total of 160 million cubic meters of water have been sent to the drought-prone areas of Sichuan and Nanun, irrigating 3.5 million mu (about 230,000 hectares) of agricultural land.
Meanwhile, China has allocated 174 million yuan (about 24.49 million US dollars) to strengthen drought relief and ensure adequate water supply.
