Narine announces decision on T20 World Cup participation

KOLKATA: Former West Indies opener Sunil Narine has announced his decision to play in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA from June 1.
The 35-year-old Narine called time on his international career in November 2023 and has been actively playing league cricket since then. He currently represents Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, where he also provides the ball for the team.
Narine had previously scored a T20 century against Rajasthan Royals, taking just 56 for 109 and was one of the tournament’s top scorers with 286 runs in seven matches at an impressive strike rate of 176.54.
Not only this, he is the leading run-scorer for KKR with nine wickets at an economy rate of 7.10. After his impressive form in the IPL, there were rumors that Nary could be in the World Cup, but the 35-year-old batted away reports confirming that the door to international cricket has been closed.
“I am very happy and humbled that my recent performances have led many to come out of retirement and openly express my desire to play in the upcoming T20 World Cup,” Narine said in a statement released by KKR.
“I have accepted the decision and while I never want to regret it, the door is closed and I will be rooting for those who take the field for the West Indies in June.
“The guys who have worked so hard over the last few months and deserve to show the amazing fans that they can win another title – I wish you all the best.”
