Islamabad: As the world community commemorated the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that UN missions play an important role in maintaining peace and protecting civilians in conflict zones.
According to the United Nations, since 1948, more than two million uniformed and civilian workers have helped countries transition from war to peace. Today, more than 70,000 peacekeepers are assigned in 11 missions around the world.
In addition to honoring the service and sacrifice of peacekeepers, this day honors more than 4,000 peacekeepers who have served for peace.
Prime Minister Shehbaz specially thanked the Pakistani peacekeepers for their important contribution.
“Our 230,000 military personnel, including the brave women peacekeepers of Pakistan, have made the nation proud for 64 years since our commitment to UN peacekeeping. Among them are 181 martyrs who sacrificed their lives for global peace, and we also pay tribute to them.
“Their bravery and selfless sacrifice will live forever in our hearts,” he said.
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to pursuing peace and justice and building a future where “peace reigns and humanity flourishes”.
