Madrid: A Madrid court on Tuesday issued a summons to appear on July 5 as part of a preliminary corruption investigation into the business dealings of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his wife.
The move rejected a request by prosecutors last week to close the investigation into Begona Gomez, saying there was “sufficient” evidence to continue the investigation.
The decision to open the inquiry was a setback for the prime minister, but a boost for his right-wing opponents, who saw the move as a settlement of corruption charges against him and his left-wing government.
Court documents seen by AFP said there was “no doubt” that a crime had been committed and “enough” evidence to continue the investigation.
The court invited Begona Gomez to appear as a party on Friday, July 5 at 10:00 (0800 GMT) as part of the preliminary investigation into crimes related to corruption in the private sector and influence trading.
