Islamabad :- Ambassador of Portugal Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva, speaking at the ceremony, highlighted Portugal’s progress over the past 50 years, since the country began its era of democracy and development in 1974. “Today, Portugal is recognized as one of the safest and most secure. countries of the world that benefit from significant economic and social progress.
Portugal celebrated its 885th National Day, celebrating a rich history that dates back to 1139. Diplomats and local guests congratulated Portugal’s Ambassador to Islamabad, Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva, who hosted a reception to mark Portugal’s National Day.
Housing and Works Minister Riaz Peerzada was the chief guest. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, the westernmost country in Europe, played a key role in global exploration and international relations for centuries.
Ambassador of Portugal Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva reflected on the historical journey of the nation. “In the 17th century, God gave the Portuguese a small country as their cradle, but the whole world as their grave,” he noted, emphasizing Portugal’s expansive influence.
After three centuries of defining and consolidating its institutions, territory and cultural identity, Portugal embarked on a new adventure in 1415. Portuguese fleets began to build sea routes that would connect them to all continents. They were the first Europeans to cross the equator and circumnavigate the African continent. They also pioneered sea voyages to Java, Thailand, Japan, China and even glimpsed Australia for the first time. In America, they reached Brazil, the Portuguese ambassador informed his guests.
Addressing current international issues, the ambassador reaffirmed Portugal’s position on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations and condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine as a dangerous precedent that must be stopped.
“Regarding Gaza, Portugal strongly condemns the ongoing offensive in Rafah and is deeply concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation,” the ambassador said, stressing the importance of recognizing the Palestinian state and the vital role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
Ambassador da Silva also spoke about the long-standing bilateral relations between Portugal and Pakistan. Since his arrival in February last year, he has traveled extensively in Pakistan, visiting cities such as Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Murree, Abbottabad, Chilas and Gilgit-Baltistan. He appreciated the beautiful nature, historical and cultural diversity and architectural and urban monuments of Pakistan. However, he noted that the most impressive impression came from the warm hospitality of the Pakistani people.
Regarding future cooperation, the ambassador highlighted key areas of common interest including renewable energy, water management, education and culture, trade and investment. He also emphasized support for Pakistan’s bid to win a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
The celebration of Portugal’s 885th anniversary was not only a reflection of its glorious past, but also a recognition of its continuing path of progress and international cooperation.
