LONDON: England wrapped up a comfortable innings and 114-run victory over the West Indies in the first Test at Lord’s on Friday, with James Anderson claiming a third-day wicket to bring the curtain down on a stellar international career.
But the 41-year-old seamer quickly got to work and Joshua Da Silva (9) fell behind in his second over of the day when he found enough movement to draw an outside edge to pick up his 704th Test wicket.
Anderson’s fourth wicket of the match spoiled West Indies’ slim chances of teasing England again and Da Silva was quickly followed by Alzarri Joseph (8).
Joseph opted to go down swinging, hitting Gus Atkinson back over the head for four between wild swings before slotting Atkinson with Ben Duckett on the leg boundary, taking the former to 10 wickets on his Test debut.
Shamar Joseph (3) was not far behind Joseph who was cleanly bowled by Atkinson as the tailender missed a straight yorker with a nasty hack across the line.
Gudakesh Motie (31 not out) put up some resistance and was involved in two highlights of the day, first driving Atkinson to the cover boundary to draw a long-on chase and a full-on bounce from Anderson to save a single run.
Anderson was given no more chances for the final wicket and Atkinson wrapped things up when Jayden Seales (8) popped Duckett as West Indies were all out for 136 to suffer a heavy defeat in barely seven sessions.
The two teams meet again in the second Test of the three-match series starting at Trent Bridge next Thursday.
