LONDON: Matthew Mott has stepped down from his role as England white-ball coach with immediate effect after two years in charge of the team.
Mott was England’s head coach when they won the 2022 World T20 Cup in Australia, defeating Pakistan in the final. However, doubts were raised over his future after the team’s below average performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup.
England failed to defend the title in both tournaments and there were reports of his sacking.
“I am extremely proud to have coached the England men’s team; it was an honor. Over the last two years we have put everything into achieving success and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion the team has shown over this period, including a spectacular victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup,” said Mott in his farewell. “I would like to thank the players, the management and everyone at ECB for their commitment, support and hard work during my tenure.
Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will take charge of the team on an interim basis to coach England when they face Australia in the white-ball series in September.
Trescothick is now looking forward to working alongside Jose Buttler as England begin preparations for the Champions Trophy, which Pakistan will host in 2025.
