KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has insisted on expanding the sit-ins to other provinces until the demands are met.
JI demanded the shutdown of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and the freezing of assets of those who had agreements with IPPs.
He stressed that his party’s fair demands were meant to solve the public crisis and claimed that some IPPs did not produce a single unit of electricity.
He also claimed that JI was always against IPP since 1994 and pointed out that IPP plants were malfunctioning.
He argued that there are IPP representatives in every government and the public should not bear the burden of government favors for others.
He also demanded that the government immediately remove the tax cuts imposed on the salaried class.
HE the Emir advised the government to adopt austerity measures to provide relief to the public instead of giving favors to a few individuals.
Hafiz Naeem urged the government to be transparent and fair about the agreements with IPPs and present them to the public.
Naeem also demanded accountability from the government to expose all politicians, bureaucrats and others who were funneling money to Dubai.
It is pertinent to note that the JI protest and sit-in against the inflated electricity and class-paid tax went on for 10 days in Rawalpindi. JI also staged a sit-in at the Sindh Governor House.
