ISLAMABAD: Civil society has expressed serious concern over the alarming rise in transgender beggars and alms seekers in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
When people tried to ignore them, they cursed or abused them and ran away, they said.
Ghazanfar Abbas, a civil society activist, said they have so far arrested 22 professional beggars from F-7, Blue Area, Nadra Office, D-Watson and surrounding localities.
Dr. Zara, a social activist, explained that people do not trust them to recruit jobs, so they are forced to pickpocket.
He further added that at every traffic signal in the capital, a transgender woman dressed in a traditional tunic and pants with a scarf will hold up a smartphone with a QR code while the signal flashes crimson and vehicles stop.
The Deputy Commissioner should launch an operation to curb professional beggars in the federal capital, demanded another civil society activist Dr Bashir Shah.
When asked by an ICT official, he said that the ICT administration is constantly conducting raids against transgender begging.
