LONDON: Former England captain Nasser Hussain is backing “serial winner” Andy Flower to become the new white-ball coach of the England cricket team after Matthew Mott resigned from his post.
Mott was England’s head coach when they won the 2022 World T20 Cup in Australia, defeating Pakistan in the final. However, after the team’s below-par performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup, doubts arose over his future and he eventually stepped down.
Flower currently leads Trent Rockets to The Hundred and Hussain believes the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) already has the “perfect” candidate.
“Some people would see [Flower] as a step back – ‘never go back, you’re going back to an ex-England manager’ – but I think Andy has moved on.
Now he has traveled the world, won most franchises and done some really good things.
“He’s a great coach. You just look at his CV and if Rob Key’s got Andy Flower’s CV, there’s hardly a better option, but again if Andy wants to do it.”
They’re all very good candidates and I repeat the job is not so much finding a candidate, it’s finding a candidate who really wants to do the job.”
Hussain also backed the ECB’s decision to keep Jose Buttler as the team’s captain after reports emerged that the wicket-keeper batsman could be sacked as captain.
“Jos is a very active and smart boy. He will know that if they keep losing, he will be next in line,” added Hussain. Buttler and with Mott.
“[Eoin] Morgan worked with [Trevor] Bayliss because Morgan was such an impressive captain and so dynamic.
