LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Monday indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) top leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the May 9 riots case.
Qureshi, who was brought to Kot Lakhpat jail from Adiala jail under tight security, has several cases related to May 9, including arson, filed against him at Shadman police station.
The court asked the PTI leader to file a case against him.
The court ordered the production of witnesses at the next hearing scheduled for July 22.
The former foreign minister, currently incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail on multiple charges, has been indicted in eight other cases related to the May 9 riots earlier this year.
In addition, a special court set up under the Official Secrets Act sentenced Qureshi to 10 years in jail in the cipher case.
However, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in June overturned Qureshi’s conviction in a cipher case registered under the Official Secrets Act.
The May 9 riots were triggered almost across the country after ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in a £190 million settlement case. Hundreds of PTI workers and senior leaders were jailed last year for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations.
During the protests, miscreants targeted civilian and military installations, including — Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The army called May 9 “Black Day” and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.
