SAN FRANCISCO: Apple is expected to launch its latest line of iPhones on Monday, which will include generative artificial intelligence features, as the tech giant looks to boost sales of its iconic device.
The company founded by Steve Jobs has revealed little about what it plans to showcase during a launch event dubbed “Glowtime” at its headquarters in the Silicon Valley city of Cupertino. However, it’s the time of year when Apple usually updates its iPhone lineup. Apple is riding high on what would be the iPhone 16, and will be hoping that customers will be enticed to buy the latest models that attract new AI capabilities.
With $39 billion in revenue last quarter, the iPhone accounts for roughly 60% of Apple’s revenue and remains the company’s main entry point to services such as the App Store or Apple TV, which are becoming a growing part of its business. Apple is just recovering from a long sales slump as users stick with older models longer.
“iPhone 16 will be one of the most significant iPhone introductions, not because of what’s on the outside, but because of what’s on the inside — namely Apple Intelligence,” said Forrester principal analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee.
“Apple Intelligence” is a new set of software features for all devices that was announced in June at the company’s annual developer conference, where it also announced a partnership with OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT. In the short term, this includes image manipulations, translations and minor creative tweaks to messaging, but not the more ambitious breakthroughs promised by other AI players such as OpenAI or Google.
