Dhaka: Bangladesh’s top court on Wednesday temporarily suspended quotas for coveted government jobs after thousands of students staged nationwide protests against what they called a discriminatory system, lawyers said.
The quota system reserves more than half of the well-paid and massively overpaid civil service jobs, amounting to hundreds of thousands of government jobs, for specific groups.
Students began protests earlier this month demanding a merit-based system, with demonstrations blocking highways and rail lines on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the order for a month, said lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque, who is representing two students seeking an end to the quota system.
