NEW DELHI: The Indian cricket team will see a new head coach for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe as Rahul Dravid’s successor Gautam Gambhir will not be joining the squad. Gambhir will be the head coach after Dravid’s retirement after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
However, he announced that he will not reapply for the post and will not travel to Zimbabwe for the five-match T20I series starting on July 6.
Instead, Gambhir will join the squad for the six-match series in Sri Lanka, which will begin on July 27, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is. An official announcement on the matter is still awaited.
According to PTI, National Cricket Academy (NCA) chairman Wangipurapu Venkata Sai Lakman will take over as head coach for the Zimbabwe tour.
Luckman, along with NCA officials, will name the Indian squad for the series, which is expected to be announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later this week.
The team will feature the best performances of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, which will be led by either Suryakumar Adadav or Hardik Pandya.
The BCCI announced that Lakhman and the NCA team are taking routine steps while Dravid and the coaching staff are on rest.
“There is a possibility that Lakman, along with some NCA coaches, will go to Zimbabwe with a new-look team. Lakman and the NCA team always fill in when Rahul Dravid and the first team coach take an occasional break,” BCCI source. PTI said.
