Canadian B-Boy Phil Wizard won the inaugural men’s Olympic gold in Paris on Saturday and said he hopes it will “open the door for people” involved in the high-energy dance sport.
Phil Wizard, real name Philip Kim, defeated French B-Boy Dany Dann in the final amid the opulent grandeur of the Place de la Concorde, with USA’s B-Boy Victor taking the bronze.
Breaking, better known as breakdancing, will make its first and possibly last appearance at the Olympics as it was left out of the program for Los Angeles 2028.
Phil Wizard said breaking was an “underrated sport” and hoped his Olympic debut would change people’s minds.
“I hope today was the perfect example of showing the world how incredible breaking is – that was really my only goal,” said the 27-year-old, a former world champion. “I’m so grateful and happy to win, but more than anything, I wanted to show the world what a breakout is.
