Chelsea have “launched internal disciplinary proceedings” after Enzo Fernandez posted a video on his Instagram that the French Football Federation (FFF) claimed was racist.
After Argentina beat Colombia in the Copa America final, Fernandez and some of his teammates sang a derogatory song about the French team during a live video posted on the midfielder’s account.
Fernandez’s Chelsea team-mate Wesley Fofana reposted the video on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “Football in 2024: racism without restraint”.
Chelsea condemned Fernandez’s actions and confirmed that she was signing off on the video investigation.
“Chelsea Football Club considers all forms of discriminatory behavior to be completely unacceptable,” it said hours after Fernandez apologized.
“We pride ourselves on being a diverse, inclusive club where people of all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.
After the FFF announced they would file a complaint with FIFA against Fernandez, the 23-year-old midfielder apologized for the video, saying there were no excuses for the words he and his teammates used during the video.
The FFF confirmed in a statement that their president Philippe Diallo will call on FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Argentina Football Association chief Claudio Fabian Tapia to respond to the alleged racist remarks.
