LAHORE: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday upheld the nine-day physical detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Shah Mahmood Qureshi in eight cases related to the May 9 riots.
ATC judge Khalid Arshad in Lahore issued a reserved order, ordering an inquiry report to be submitted on June 5 after Qureshi was interrogated.
The court ordered the interrogation of the PTI leader through a video link.
The court also heard that the suspect posted videos and messages on social media, according to investigators. All materials posted by Qureshi on social media have been sent to forensic laboratories.
Qureshi is currently detained in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on various charges. Additionally, a special court constituted under the Official Secrets Act sentenced Qureshi to 10 years in prison in the encryption case.
Police on May 26 booked the PTI leader in eight more cases related to the May 9, 2023 attack.
Riots erupted across the country on May 9 following the arrest of Prime Minister Imran Khan in a 190-million-euro case.
Last year, hundreds of PTI workers and senior leaders were jailed for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations.
During the protest, miscreants targeted civilian and military facilities – Jinnah House and General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
Some party bigwigs and senior members parted ways with PTI and Khan took action against those involved in the May 9 incident.
