Karachi: A Metropolis local court on Tuesday dismissed Sarim Burni’s human trafficking plea.
During the trial, the prosecutor’s agency told the court that more evidence is needed to collect against the suspect.
“If the suspect is granted bail, it may affect the investigation,” the FIA lawyer said, adding that the accused had been lying regularly.
He said more was revealed during the investigation.
The FIA lawyer told the court that the baby girl’s mother, Haya, contacted a social worker to return her daughter, but she refused to hand her over.
Meanwhile, Burney’s lawyer said the FIA did not conduct a proper investigation into the matter.
“The parents who took the child from the hospital were handed over to the Sarim Burney Trust,” he said.
The advice of social workers is that all legal requirements are met during the adoption process.
Over the weekend, the court ordered Burnie to jail on remand and denied the agency’s request for an extension of his physical custody.
The social worker, who runs the non-profit organization Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International, was arrested on June 5 after landing at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi following a visit from the US.
His subsequent arrest and detention came after US authorities filed a complaint against him on charges of human trafficking, smuggling and smuggling of children into the United States.
Bernay is accused of smuggling her newborn daughter, Haya, into the United States. Officials said Burney bought the boy from his parents for $1 million and shipped him to the United States.
