Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Monday that inflation based on consumer price index (CPI) in May 2024 decreased to 11.8 percent in May 2024.
According to PBS data, inflation based on CPI in the corresponding month last year was 38.0% (May 2023).
On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, it fell to 3.2% in May 2024, compared to a 0.4% decline last month and a 1.6% increase in May 2023.
According to the data, CPI Urban inflation rose to 19.4% last month, compared to an increase of 35.1% in May 2023, to 14.3% year-on-year in May 2024. On a basic basis, it decreased to 2.8% in May 2024, compared to a decrease of 0.1 % in the previous month and an increase of 1.5% in May 2023.
Rural CPI inflation increased to 8.2% year-on-year in May 2024, up from 14.5% in the previous month and 4.2% in May 2023. It decreased to 3.9% month-on-month in May 2024, compared to a decrease of 0.9% in the previous month and an increase of 1.7% in May 2023.
On a YoY basis, sentiment price index (SPI) inflation rose to 15.3% in May 2024, compared to 21.6% a month earlier, and 43.0% in May 2023. Down 4.0% in May 2024 on a MoM basis. down 0.7% a month ago and up 1.3% in May 2023.
On a YoY basis, wholesale price index (WPI) inflation rose to 9.9% in May 2024, compared to 13.9% a month ago and 32.8% in May 2023. On a MoM basis, it decreased by 2.5% in May 2024 compared to a decrease of 0.7% in the previous month and 1.0% growth in the same month last year, which is May 2023.
Core inflation, measured by non-food items, rose to 12.3% in May 2024 (YoY), compared to 13.1% last month and 20.0% in May 2023. , increased by 0.4% in May 2024 compared to 2.1% growth in the previous month and 1.2% in the corresponding month last year, which is May 2023.
Rural core inflation, measured by non-food labor, rose to 17.0% in May 2024, compared to 19.3% last month and a rise of 26.9% in May 2023. (MoM), rose 0.5% in May 2024 compared to 2.0% in the previous month and 2.5% in the same month last year.
