Johannesburg: South Africa’s ruling ANC party has held internal talks on how to form a government after failing to win a clear majority in last week’s general election.
African National Congress President Cyril Ramaphosa scored the lowest with 40% of the vote and needed the support of another party for the first time since democracy was established in 1994.
On Wednesday, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said senior leaders preferred to form a broad coalition for a government of national unity.
Observers say this can be difficult, given the differences between the various groups they are supposed to be part of.
