Peshawar: A magnitude 4.7 earthquake jolted Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the federal capital’s National Seismological Center.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt in the twin cities as well as in the northwestern province of the country.
The cities of KP include Peshawar, Swat, Parachinar, Malakand, Lower Dir, Hangu, Charsadda, Swabi and surrounding areas. Earthquakes were also recorded in North and South Waziristan districts.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the southeastern region of Afghanistan.
He also said that the depth of the earthquake was 98 kilometers.
Earlier this month, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Clifton neighborhood of Karachi.
According to the seismic monitoring center, the epicenter was 15 km northeast of Karachi at a depth of 22 km.
However, there was no loss of life or property due to the earthquake.
This is the third time in recent weeks that the city has been hit by a small earthquake in early June.
On May 2, an earthquake measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale hit the metropolis, including the city of Gadap, Katohar and the adjoining areas of Malir district.
According to the seismic monitoring center, the epicenter was 38 km northeast of Malir, with a depth of 84 km.
Similarly, on April 24, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake occurred in Karachi’s Malir district.
Natural disasters such as earthquakes are not uncommon in Pakistan, as the country is located between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Most of South Asia is seismically active because the tectonic plate called the Indian plate is moving north towards the Eurasian plate.
Recent earthquakes show the importance of disaster preparedness and mitigation measures.
