Guayaquil, Ecuador: Former Vice President of Ecuador Jorge Glas was arrested after storming the Mexican Embassy in Quito and hospitalized after refusing to eat prison food.
Glass, 54, is in good condition at a naval hospital in Guayaquil and will be monitored “shortly” until he returns to prison, SNAI said.
Ecuador raided the embassy on Friday to arrest Glass, who is waiting for a corruption investigation against him.
Mexico had granted him political refugee status hours earlier.
Brussels-based lawyer Glaze told AFP on Monday that he feared for his life and had appealed for international help.
“I believe that Jorge Glaz is in great danger in the hands of the (Ecuadorian) government. It is a kidnapping and I believe they can kill him at any time,” said Sonia Vera.
The SNAI statement said Glaas did not respond when called at the Guayas prison on Monday.
After refusing to eat for 24 hours, he fell ill and was taken to the hospital.
The move to the embassy of Ecuador caused a political upheaval, with Mexico, several other Latin American countries, Spain, the European Union and the president of the United Nations.
Mexico has said it will appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which cut diplomatic ties and expelled its diplomatic staff from Ecuador.
