ANKARA: An elephant was hit by a wave during a religious event in southern Sri Lanka, injuring 13 people.
The incident occurred on Saturday night during the Ruhunu Kataragama Mahadevala procession, a major religious and cultural event held in Kataragama in Uwa province.
Police said the injured were treated at a local hospital, but no one was seriously injured.
Rampage of elephants during religious festivals is not uncommon in the country, mainly due to the loud voices of the participants.
Authorities often advise keeping elephants quiet during processions to keep them calm.
