LONDON: England have suffered a major blow ahead of the upcoming Test summer, as promising fast bowler Josh Tongue has been sidelined for some time after recovering from a pectoral injury.
Although he has not played since August last year, Deeley is considered a top contender to fill the void left by the retirement of James Anderson from Test cricket after the first match against the West Indies.
Dile has been struggling with a pectoral problem since his outstanding performances in two test matches last year. The failure forced him to miss England’s all-white tour of the Caribbean and the ICC World Test Championship in India earlier this year.
This latest setback means Dile will miss England’s three-match series against the West Indies and is in doubt for the next Sri Lanka series.
According to a statement from the English camp, Deeley’s injury has returned and there is no definite time frame to return to action.
Deel made a memorable start to his international career, claiming a five-wicket haul in his first match against Ireland, and repeated the feat in the second Ashes Test against Australia at Lord’s.
When Anderson was set to retire after the first Test against the West Indies in July, Basa was identified as a potential successor. However, the lack of injuries makes his future in the national team uncertain.
