Shahid Afridi, the former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team, said he was unable to “understand” the recent removal of Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee.
The removal of Riaz and Abdul Razzaq comes after the national team’s disappointing performance during the T20 World Cup 2024 as the PCB management lost faith in the duo and their views were not taken into account for some time, according to sources.
Afridi, who is currently participating in the World Championship of Legends 2024 in England as part of the Pakistan Champions, told reporters that he did not understand the PCB’s latest move.
He emphasized that Riaz and Abdul Razzaq are not the only members of the selection committee and several other people are also involved.
“I don’t understand this kind of ‘operation’.”
Afridi also said that whatever “surgery” is needed must be done once and for all. He added that whoever is fielded now must be given enough time to improve their captaincy skills.
“As far as Babar is concerned, no captain has been given such an open chance (to prove his captaincy),” Afridi told reporters, pointing out that Azam had played in several international tournaments.
However, he did not seem impressed by Azam’s captaincy skills despite the “unbelievable” opportunities he had.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq and Bilal Afzal are still part of the seven-member panel that also includes the captain and head coach.
