GUYANA: Fazal haq Farooqui achieved career-best figures of 5-9 as Afghanistan beat Uganda by 125 in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Chasing 184 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, Uganda were all out for just 58 in 16 overs.
Farooqui took two wickets in the first half of the innings which put Uganda on the back foot during the run. After losing early wickets, Uganda failed to recover and was bundled out.
Naveen-ul-Haq and Reshit Khan also took two wickets each.
Sorry, but in a successful display, Robinson Obuya was Uganda’s top scorer with 14 goals from 25 balls.
Uganda won the tournament and decided to play Afghanistan first in the fifth match of the World Cup.
First Batting, Afghanistan finished on 183-5 in 20 overs.
The Afghanistan opener gave his team a solid start with a 154-run stand for the first wicket. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 76 from 45 balls, while Ibrahim Zadran scored 70 from 46 balls.
Gurbaz and Zadra’s opening stand of 154 was the second-highest among men in the T20 World Cup, second only to the 170-run partnership between England’s Jos Buttler and Alex Hales in the 2022 World Cup.
However, after a strong start, the Afghans lost their way and lost four quick wickets for just 15 runs, which helped curb Uganda’s run flow. Cosmas Kyewuta also posted figures of 2-25.
In the last five overs, Afghanistan managed to score 27 runs for the loss of four wickets in just 5.40.
