Buenos Aires: Hundreds of security forces fired tear gas and water cannons at protesters protesting proposed economic reforms in Buenos Aires.
Two demonstrations were set on fire by angry protesters, and demonstrations turned violent as Argentine lawmakers debated a raft of reforms proposed by budget-wielding President Javier Mileh.
Clashes erupted as protesters pelted stones at pepper-spraying officers and tried to surround the wall erected between them and the Congress.
Later, when night fell, officers with shields mounted on motorbikes and others overturned two cars and pushed back the seated protesters, one of whom belonged to a local media organization.
Lawmaker Cecilia Moreau told AFP that at least five opposition lawmakers were “hospitalized” in the crowd.
At least 40 people were treated after being pepper-sprayed, the NGO Association Against Institutional Violence told AFP.
