Kylian Mbappe and France have reached the finals of the last two World Cups, but after disappointing in the last edition of the continental championship, they are looking to start their Euro 2024 campaign on Monday against Austria.
Les Bleus lost in the 2022 final after an epic battle with Argentina in Doha at the 2018 World Cup in Russia as teenager Mbappe announced himself on the world stage.
They also won the UEFA Nations League in 2021, but the 2012 European Championship is the title that has eluded France since Didier Deschamps took over as coach in 2012.
The runners-up in 2016 have bitter memories of their last Euro three years ago, when they suffered a quick extra-time defeat to Portugal at the Stade de France.
Deschamps’ side crashed out of Euro 2020 in the last 16 after beating Switzerland 3-1 on penalties.
Mbappe missed a crucial goal and the 25-year-old, who recently signed for Real Madrid, is now hoping to change that as he leads his country to glory in Germany.
France has been European champion twice, most recently in 2000, captained by 31-year-old Deschamps.
“Whatever happens, he left an indelible mark on the French national team,” Mbappe said of Deschamps in an interview with regional daily Ouest-France.
“Now if he wants to make more history, he has to do something this summer because it’s only one euro he’s lost as a coach.
“Then it ticks every box.”
France became favorites to lift the trophy after defeating Italy in the 2006 World Cup final at the same Olympic Stadium in Berlin on July 14.
Also in Group D are the Netherlands and Poland after Monday’s clash with Austria improved in Dusseldorf.
France has played out a lopsided draw with Canada in recent outings, including last weekend.
However, there is an explanation for this, and there is hope that Les Blas will find their best form in Germany.
Deschamps always makes tactical adjustments that take time to assimilate.
Antoine Griezmann’s position has been put to the test, but the feeling is that Atlético Madrid will show the midfield role he played so well in Qatar.
There is something else on the French left, with Theo Hernández likely to play a leading full-back role behind Marcus Thuram.
Inter striker Mbappe should start in the middle, while 37-year-old Olivier Giroud is no longer a starter.
Then comes N’Golo Kante, who is 33 and plays in Saudi Arabia.
He missed the 2022 World Cup through injury but has been recalled by Deschamps after a two-year layoff and should start against Austria.
His and Giroud’s experience could prove valuable in a young squad that features 11 players 25 or younger.
“I am full of excitement, nostalgia and desire. The main goal is to have the best competition possible,” said Giroud as he prepares for his final major tournament.
“I still remember the 2016 final. It was a dream tournament to win.”
Several French players have spoken in recent days about the election that could see the victory of the right in the country’s National Assembly.
The vote will be held during the race, and Deschamps’ team, many of whom are immigrants, can expect regular questions on the issue.
The coach will hope his players are not disturbed and will create a desire to divide and unite the divided country.
There is no doubt that France has more players than the electric Mbappé.
There are questions about his central defense, but Arsenal’s William Saliba is trying to establish himself on the back of an excellent season in England.
Griezmann is an inspiration and Ousmane Dembele is a nightmare for right backs.
“We’re all relaxed. Our ambitions haven’t changed. Just because we’re relaxed doesn’t mean we’re going to win the Euros, we’re going to do our best,” said winger Kingsley Coman.
