London: Cricket statistician Frank Duckworth, creator of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, died on Friday, June 21 at the age of 84.
The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is commonly used for weather-adjusted targets in cricket.
Originally developed by Duckworth and Tony Lewis, it was called the Duckworth-Lewis (DL) method after it was first used in international cricket in 1997. However, after the retirement of Duckworth and Lewis in 2014, it was renamed the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. and system changes by Australian statistician Stephen Stern.
Before the DL method, the rain rule was used to count wickets in truncated matches, such as the famous 1992 ODI World Cup semi-final between England and South Africa in Sydney.
“Frank is a highly respected statistician, respected by his peers and the wider cricket fraternity,” ICC Chief Cricket Operations Officer Wasim Khan said in a statement.
