Rome: The luxury Italian holiday resort frequented by Madonna and Justin Timberlake, who will head the G7 this week, is an oasis away from crowds, media and protesters.
Built from scratch in a traditional village style, Borgo Egnazia is located on the Adriatic coast of Italy, near Bari, Puglia, in the area that forms the “heel” of the shoe country.
From Thursday to Saturday, discussions will be held between the leaders of the Group of Seven rich countries and other invited guests, from US President Joe Biden to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pope Francis.
Equipped with several pools and its own countryside, Borgo Egnazia – whose motto is ‘Nowhere’ – allows guests to roam freely in the adjacent private complex.
Nestled among olive trees and boasting its own private beach offering a variety of water sports, this complex features traditional buildings and flower-lined streets.
Within its walls are bars, restaurants, including a Michelin-starred shop and spa facilities, meaning visitors don’t need a permit if they choose.
Pop megastar Madonna has stayed here three times to celebrate her birthday.
US singer and actor Justin Timberlake married Jessica Biel in 2012 in front of about 80 guests in Borgo Egnazia square.
However, two rooms are not cheap at 2,000 euros ($2,170) for a weekend in June.
Although overshadowed by Italian regions such as Tuscany for many years, Puglia offers stunning beaches, local cuisine, heritage and centuries-old olive groves that have become a top tourist destination in the last decade.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, host of the G7 summit, was among those vacationing there.
Far from Rome or Milan, Puglia is served by two international airports in Bari and Brindisi, as well as high-speed train services – exploring the southernmost part still requires a car.
Borgo Egnazia was obviously chosen because it was a bit off the beaten path, some comforts in the countryside are easier to lock down than in the cities.
With a high-profile guest list, security is always tight at the G7 summit, and even this year the media was kept away.
Hundreds of journalists who came to Puglia to cover the event will stay in the press center in Bari, 60 km away, and will only attend the press conference.
Demonstrations are expected to reach nearby towns and cities.
