QUITO: Ecuador’s La Cumbre volcano, part of the Galapagos archipelago, has begun to erupt, the South American country’s government announced on Sunday. There was no immediate danger as the island where the volcano is located is uninhabited, the environment ministry confirmed.
La Cumbre on Fernandina Island is one of many active volcanoes in the Galapagos Islands, which are nearly 1,000 km (600 mi) from mainland Ecuador. Images taken from a distance and shared on social media showed glowing lava moving before dawn in the early hours of Sunday.
The volcano last erupted in 2020 after several years of activity. This eruption was likely larger than those previously recorded, authorities said.
