NEW DELHI: Former India Virender Sehwag has been named as the captain as the Blues beat South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
After the win, two Indian powerhouses, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, announced their retirement from T20Is, which meant the Blues needed to find a new captain in the shorter format, as well as a top-class batsman.
Speaking to Cricbuzz after India’s win, Sehwag suggested that Shubman Gill, who was included in India’s T20 World Cup squad as a touring reserve, could be the best option for captaincy in the long run.
“Shubman Gill is a long-shot. He is a player who plays all three formats. He performed very well last year. He failed to qualify for T20 World Cup 2024. I think it was the right decision to pick him as captain. With Rohit Sharma leaving tomorrow , Shubman Gill is the captain he will do his duty,” said Sehwag.
Hardik Pandya is seen as the leading candidate to replace Sharma as captain as he was the deputy in the World Cup, but the decision will be taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) soon.
However, Gill has been named captain for India’s T20I series against Zimbabwe, which could be a sign that he will be India’s next captain in the shorter format.
