SYDNEY: Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie has been appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan men’s test cricket team. Gillespie brings a wealth of coaching experience to his new role, having previously coached in various positions around the world, but this will be his first time coaching on an international Test pitch.
“The opportunity to be the head coach of the Pakistan Test team is fantastic. It’s an honour. I’ve coached in various roles around the world for some time now, but one thing I haven’t done is coach an international Test, so when the opportunity came, I jump on it,” he said.
Gillespie outlines the challenges and opportunities of coaching Pakistan’s Test team.
“This is an exciting job for the coach of Pakistan. I mean, there is talent and there are some very good cricketers. But sometimes there is conflict. I think it can help the team a little bit to give some clarity in how the Test cricket game goes,”. Gillespie said.
As for the selector’s role, Gillespie said communication and collaboration with other members of the selection team and the captain is important. He expressed his belief in building a strong bond with the team and improving their performance.
“I am glad to be a member of the selection committee. I have been a selector throughout my coaching career. Everything is clear and communicative. I am looking forward to working with everyone on the selection panel. As captain, I feel good and I will build strong relationships and go from there , but again, communication and clarity of thought are important,” he said.
In the upcoming 2024-25 season, Pakistan will face Bangladesh, England and South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship. Gillespie is ready to take each series as it comes and prepare his team for tournament success.
