Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat Friday said that Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has been “removed” from the post of chairman of the former ruling party due to “unsatisfactory” performance. His remarks came a day after Gohar announced that Barrister Ali Zafar was the next candidate for the chairmanship. Internal party elections are to be held on March 3.
The former ruling party’s top post has been lying vacant for more than a month after not only the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) but also the Supreme Court declared its internal party elections illegal and stripped the party of its iconic bat symbol.
Therefore, Gohar, who became the chairman as a result of this election, was no longer the party chief. But as the party is about to hold another election, it has chosen someone other than him.
Speaking to Geo News, Marwat said, “The reasons behind Gohar’s removal as chairman are incompetence and poor performance. Barrister Gohar is a gentleman but his performance was not satisfactory.
Responding to a question, the PTI leader said that Gohar had failed to meet the expectations of the workers. “To run a party office, one has to be active all the time, but that didn’t happen.”
After the election results, the attitude of the party leadership was not commendable, he said, adding that Gohar was supposed to lead the party after the elections but failed.
A day earlier, while announcing the candidate for the top post, Gohar said, “This time Barrister Ali Zafar and General Secretary Omar Ayub will be our party chairman candidate.

He said everyone should do everything in their power to ensure that Zafar is elected as the next party chairman.
PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan announced the holding of internal party polls to elect the chairman, central and provincial organizing bodies on February 5, but the party postponed the elections.
According to PTI’s new election plan, candidates intending to contest the internal party polls can submit their nomination papers on February 23 and 24, with the scrutiny taking place on February 25.
Meanwhile, final decisions on nomination papers will be announced on February 27 and voting will be held on March 3 at party headquarters as well as provincial secretariats.
