Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday declared a public holiday on May 28 (today) to mark the historic day of Pakistan’s successful nuclear test in 1998 at the Chaghi Mountains in Youm-e-Takbeer.
In his statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz said that ‘umum-e-Takbeer’ reminded the people of Pakistan about the invincible defense unity of the country.
The Prime Minister today said that the entire nation will accept external pressure for the integrity of this country and will not compromise on the defense of the country.
“Youm-e-Takbeer reminds the political and defense forces to unite under one flag, the green crescent, to strengthen the defense of this country,” he said.
The Prime Minister also said that ‘umum-e-Takbeer’ is a day to honor former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the Pakistan Army for the invincible defense of Pakistan.
“Today, we pay tribute to [former prime minister] Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the scientists who were instrumental in supporting Pakistan’s nuclear program,” the prime minister added.
Prime Minister Shehbaz, including the entire nation, promised to work at all times to ensure the economic safety of this country, as he did on May 28, 1998, to protect the country’s defense.
Pakistan’s nuclear test not only shows the country’s determination to maintain its territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty, but also shows its desire to maintain the strategic balance in South Asia.
India began testing its “device” in 1974, forcing Pakistan to accelerate its nuclear program.
Amid chants of “Allah-o-Akbar”, Pakistan conducted its first Test on 28 May 1998 in the Ras Koh mountains of Chagai district, Balochistan.
