Islamabad: The Narendra Modi-led Indian government’s decision to include the abrogation of Article 370 in the school curriculum has sparked controversy, with critics saying it is an attempt to manipulate history on the Kashmir dispute.
India’s National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), under the Ministry of Education, has introduced the updated syllabus, reports Kashmir Media.
This revision, which targets the Politics and Social Science textbooks for grades 11 and 12, confirms the August 2019 repeal of Article 370, which granted special status to the Occupied Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Another unilateral change involved replacing the term “Pakistani Occupied Kashmir” with “Pakistani Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK)” referring to Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
However, there is no reference to Hindutva-driven incidents such as the UN Security Council resolution declaring the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir as disputed territory, the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat. .
Critics argue that these errors and changes indicate an attempt to create a biased narrative in the textbook, raising concerns about the depiction of historical events and the Kashmir conflict.
