Rahul Gandhi, the central leader of the opposition Indian Congress Party and the “Indian” opposition alliance, announced that the people had agreed to decide against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The announcement comes as the Congress-led opposition alliance is expected to get a significant margin when the general election results will be announced today.
Addressing a press conference with other Congress leaders ahead of the official announcement of election results, Gandhi said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has waged a war against all electoral machinery.
Gandhi accused the BJP of using various tactics to maintain power, including splitting the party and arresting the prime minister.
Emphasizing unity within the Congress, Gandhi thanked the poor, workers and farmers for their role in the electoral battle against the government. He said that through this election, the Union of India played an important role in protecting the constitution of India.
“The election results sent a clear message to Modi’s people: they don’t want him anymore,” Gandhi said. He added that a decision on which seats to retain and which positions to resign would be taken after consultation with allies. “After meeting with our partners, we will decide on an alliance with any party.”
Speaking on the occasion, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge lauded the party’s success in the Lok Sabha elections. He condemned the BHJ’s tactics and declared the election results as a major victory for the people and a defeat for the ruling party. “This election is Modi against the people and this result is a huge defeat for the ruling party and a victory for the people,” Kharge said.
