LOWER DIR: The district administration in collaboration with the district youth affairs, sports, social welfare, education department and child protection unit arranged a function at the government centennial model high school Timergara to mark the International Human Rights’ Day here on Sunday. The schools’ students, teachers, representatives of different government departments and social workers attended the function. The students presented speeches and tableaus regarding human rights and got applause from the audience. The guests distributed books, note books and other prizes among students for their best participation.
The function was addressed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa human rights commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Mr Akbar Khan, additional deputy commissioner (revenue) Tariq Khan, principal of the school Rahatullah and others. The speakers highlighted the importance of the day and human rights. They said the Day was observed each year on Dec 10 to inform people about their fundamental rights and liberties. They said that every individual irrespective of their religion, caste and colour was entitled to those rights which had been recognized by the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
Mr Akbar Khan informed the participants that the world observed the 75th anniversary of the UDHR. He said that freedom, equality and justice for all, was the theme of this day. He said that as a member state, Pakistan was also a signatory of the UDHR and it had to guarantee the rights of every individual irrespective of his/her nationality, race, gender and ethnicity. He said that every individual had the right to life, freedom from torture, freedom of speech, right to health and right to education. He said that it was the state responsibility to ensure these rights.
The speakers also condemned the brutal bombardment of Israeli forces on Palestinians and termed it war crimes. They said that Israel was violating human rights in the war against Hamas and the world should stop it from massacring women, children and aged people.
