Islamabad: The Ambassador of Italy to Pakistan, Marilina Armelli, has launched an initiative to educate out-of-school children in Pakistan through Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI).
Therefore, he took the initiative to highlight the benefits of registration and education through radio broadcasts.
This initiative will also help schools share practical information on sustainable development practices.
In an exclusive interview with APP, the ambassador announced that IRI’s major initiative will be launched next month to redefine educational opportunities for millions of out-of-school children.
Italy, in collaboration with local partners and supported by UNESCO, will launch a pioneering Radio Education program to address educational gaps and empower disadvantaged communities in Pakistan.
Pakistan has a literacy rate of 62% and faces significant disparities in access to education. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s new ‘Education Urgent’ has announced a massive effort to enroll millions of out-of-school children in education. This initiative marks an important milestone in Pakistan’s quest for inclusive education and economic development.
Responding to a question, Marilyn emphasized the key role of the government, teachers and parents in fostering a safe education ecosystem.
The project not only promotes learning, but also empowers communities to adopt sustainable practices, increasing their resilience to environmental issues.
Apart from education, Italy and Pakistan are exploring economic synergies. With the growth of trade relations and interests in agriculture, energy and tourism, both countries want to capitalize on each other’s strengths.
The possibility of direct flights between Milan and Lahore will meet the needs of the vibrant Pakistani diaspora in Italy, indicating a promising future for bilateral relations and cultural exchange.
As Pakistan navigates its educational and economic aspirations, the partnership with Italy is a beacon of hope and opportunity. Through joint efforts and shared ideas, the two countries are moving towards a future where education is the foundation for societal prosperity and inclusive growth.
He also highlighted efforts such as the Pakistan-Italy Debt Swap Agreement (PIDSA), which financed 48 projects across the country, and said, “In Gilgit-Baltistan, they are helping with environmental strategies and promoting eco-tourism.”
Partnerships with UNESCO include projects such as “Supporting Girls’ Right to Education” to enroll 6,570 girls and train 457 teachers in innovative ways.
The upcoming Radio Education Project will use interactive radio instruction to improve post-school education and community resilience.
Marilyn highlighted the role of literacy in empowering individuals and improving socio-economic results.
“Italy’s commitment shows the impact of international cooperation in Pakistan, promoting a fairer future through education and sustainable development,” the ambassador said in response to a question.
