The caretaker government on Tuesday created a six-member joint investigative team (JIT) to “ascertain facts behind malicious social media campaign” against Supreme Court judges.According to a notification issued by the interior ministry, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the committee was created under Section 30 (authority to probe) of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016
The additional director general of the Cyber Crime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency would call the JIT to order. Along with the deputy inspector general of the Islamabad police, a representative of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, the Intelligence Bureau, Inter-Services Intelligence, and any other co-opted member are also included.“Ascertain facts behind malicious social media campaign attempting to malign the image of the honorable judges of the Supreme Court” was one of the notification’s key points about the JIT’s mandate.The committee would also be in charge of locating the guilty parties and prosecuting them in line with applicable laws, filing lawsuits in the appropriate courts, and suggesting ways to stop similar occurrences in the future. The announcement stated, “The JIT shall submit a preliminary report to the Ministry of Interior within a fortnight,” and it further stated that the panel would receive help from FIA headquarters throughout the inquiry.
