Ashash Raj Films’ Junaid Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat are yet to appear in Maharaj, which is slated for a June 14 Netflix release. The Gujarat High Court granted provisional permission for the film’s release following a petition filed by the Indian team.
The petitioners, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, said the film portrayed the 19th-century Hindu religious leader from the state of Gujarat in a negative light and could hurt religious sentiments, according to the film’s release. The controversy comes on top of the nearly 10-day-long tension over the film.
Maharaj promises to reveal the hidden chapter of Indian history. Set in pre-independence India (1862), the film depicts the heroic struggle of journalist and social reformer Karsandas Mulji. Stepping into Mulji’s shoes is Junaid Khan, who marks his debut as the son of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of a troubled nation. With only three universities established and the Sepoy Mutiny still in place, India struggled with social and political change. Mulji, who studied in Mumbai, emerged as a champion for the marginalized, inspired by his mentor, scientist leader Dadabhai Naoroji. His steadfast commitment to justice led him to confront powerful personalities in the infamous Maharaj defamation case.
Maharaj aims to recreate Mulji’s legacy and bring his story to a modern audience. However, the portrayal of Hindu religious leaders in the film created controversy. The VHP and the Bajrang Dal have reportedly called for a boycott of the film, fueling tensions.
