Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced plans to introduce a road construction tax on vehicles registered outside the province.
The proposed law, titled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Road User Charges Bill 2024, will soon be approved by the Finance Adviser, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muzzammil Aslam.
Under the provisions of the bill, additional fees will be charged to road users of vehicles registered in federal territories and other provinces to generate revenue to support road infrastructure projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Moreover, to simplify the vehicle registration process and ensure compliance, the announcement of online vehicle registration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected in the coming days, said Muzzammil Aslam.
Commercial and residential property tax reform is underway in the province, said the financial advisor, adding that this initiative is aimed at increasing revenue collection.
Commenting on the proposed tax rates and enforcement mechanism, Financial Adviser Anwar Khatak Khan said that the Road User Fee Act is primarily aimed at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa residents who are registered outside the province.
Discussions are ongoing regarding specific tariffs and enforcement procedures to ensure effective implementation.
The excise department has issued universal number plates to simplify the process of taxation and tax collection of vehicles registered in the province.
