The Lahore High Court has allowed the Punjab government to distribute electric bicycles to students in the province till Monday.
The court order to stay the distribution of electric bikes remained until Monday and details of the project have been sought.
The court made this observation in a case involving the eradication of tobacco in the province.
LHC has successfully launched electric bikes with court orders and has sought details from the Punjab government about the scope and implementation of the initiative.
The court asked the government for a detailed report on how many e-bikes are distributed in which cities.
Justice Shaheed Karim expressed concern over misuse of e-bikes and said students should be encouraged to use public transport. He said it is important to ensure the safety of students and if they are given an e-bike, it will be one wheel.
The judge also pointed out the possibility of male students congregating outside of women’s colleges if this wheel is given. He said, instead of providing e-bikes to students, the college should provide e-buses. This shift towards public transport aims to develop safer and more secure mobility options for students in Punjab.
In addition, a member of the judicial commission said that with the order of the court, the supply of 2000 kilograms less chicken has started in Tollinton Lahore market.
