Malay Mail reported that former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been hospitalized in the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.
The 99-year-old ex-prime minister has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) due to a cough since July 15 and will remain in the hospital for a few days, his spokesman Sufi Yusoff said on Thursday, without giving further details about his condition.
Mahathir, who has been hospitalized several times and has a history of heart problems. He also previously suffered from COVID-19 and was hospitalized for an unspecified infection earlier this year for 53 days.
He is among those being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over matters related to asset declarations.
He led his nation for nearly a quarter of a century in two different capacities as Prime Minister.
His first tenure ended in 2003 after 22 years on the job.
Mahathir returned as prime minister at the age of 92 after leading an opposition coalition to a historic election victory in 2018, defeating the party he once led.
However, his government collapsed in less than two years due to internal disagreements, leading to his sudden resignation as Prime Minister in 2020.
